Body Mass Index or BMI is an index of desireable weight ranges. It's determined by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of a person's height in meters.
You can calculate your BMI by using this tool found here. Once you've done that and are armed with that infomation come on back to see just exactly what that means to your health.
Ranges of BMI:
Gender
|
Desireable BMI |
Regarded as Overweight |
Regarded as Obese |
Females
|
18.7-23.5 |
23.6-28.2 |
>28.2 |
Males
|
20.5-25.0 |
25.0-30.0 |
>30.0 |
Just as body fat percentage does, BMI also increases in tandem with the progression of the aging process. Both of these markers are useful in objectively measuring how a person's health compares to their piers.
Following is a chart that depicts desireable weight (for height) based on the BMI. If you're not metricly inclined I've included conversion instructions below to help translate these numbers into ones that will make sense to you.

To figure out your height in cm you can use this formula. Remember 1 ft. is equal to 12 inchs to convert your height to total inches first then use this formula:
Inches X 2.54 = your height in cm.
Once you've done that find the desireable weight range from the table in kilograms. To convert that number from kg to lbs simple multiply by 2.2 and you've got your 'desired weight range'.
So, that formula would look like this:
Weight in kg X 2.2 (more accurately 2.20462262) = Weight in lbs
Remember though that this doesn't account for body fat pecentage as previously discussed.
